1. About the Experience
What is a whale swimming tour?
A whale swimming tour is a guided experience where small groups enter the water with humpback whales in their natural habitat. You’ll observe these gentle giants up close, witnessing their incredible behavior while following responsible and ethical wildlife interaction guidelines.
Is it safe to swim with humpback whales?
Yes! Swimming with whales is a safe and life-changing experience when done with experienced guides who follow strict safety protocols. Humpback whales are typically gentle and curious, but we always maintain a respectful distance and never force interactions.

Will I definitely get to swim with a whale?
While we have high success rates, whale encounters depend on nature. We do everything possible to provide the best chances, but we cannot guarantee sightings or swims.
4. During the Tour
How many people are on each trip?
We keep our groups small (6-8 guests per boat) to provide an intimate, low-impact experience.
How long are we in the water with the whales?
Each day includes multiple swims, but exact time varies based on whale behavior and weather conditions. We always respect the whales’ comfort levels.
Can I touch or approach the whales?
No. We follow strict ethical guidelines—no touching, chasing, or disturbing the whales. We allow passive encounters, meaning the whales choose to engage with us.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety is our priority. If rough seas prevent swimming, we may adjust the schedule or offer alternative activities. Refunds are not given for weather-related disruptions.
5. Conservation & Ethics
How do these tours help protect humpback whales?
We support marine conservation through:
✔ Ethical whale interactions with no harassment
✔ Educating guests on ocean preservation
Are the whales disturbed by human interaction?
Our tours follow strict wildlife-friendly practices, ensuring the whales never feel threatened. We approach slowly and let the whales dictate the interaction.
6. Health & Safety
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, comprehensive travel insurance (including coverage for water activities) is required for all participants.
What happens in a medical emergency?
We carry first aid kits, and our guides are trained in emergency response.
Can I join if I have a medical condition?
Please consult your doctor before booking if you have any medical conditions. Let us know of any concerns in advance.
7. Other Questions
Can I bring my kids?
Younger participants will be considered on a case by case basis. Contact Magenta for more information.
Can I bring a drone for filming?
While filming humpback whales with a drone in Tonga is possible, it requires a responsible approach. By adhering to best practices and respecting both local customs and marine life, you can ensure a safe and ethical filming experience.
Best Practices for Drone Operation:
Seek Permission: Before flying, consult with Magenta or your boat captain to ensure compliance with any regional guidelines or customary practices.
Maintain Safe Distances: It's prudent to adopt international standards. For instance, in Hawaii, drones are required to maintain a minimum distance of 100 yards (300 feet) from humpback whales to prevent disturbance.
